Time for Me to Fly - REO!!

DRUMMERS ROCK!

What can I say - I ran out to Newbury Comics and bought an REO Speedwagon Greatests Hits CD.
Yup - just really wanted it and have been listening on my MP3 Player in my blue Aveo Chevrolet for a few weeks. An interesting fact about REO Speedwagon - the name came from REO Speed Wagon, a flatbed truck and fire engine, manufactured by the REO Motor Car Company. ("R.E.O." are initials of the company's founder, Ransom Eli Olds, who also founded Oldsmobile, once a division of General Motors.)

Hey - I loved REO back in my earlier days and still do!
One of my favorites is TIME FOR ME TO FLY - REO Speedwagon
Great version for audio!

My eleven-year-old daughter, Sabrina likes KEEP ON LOV'N YOU - yup But I can only
rock out when she is NOT in the car - unless we are ROCK'N out to HER music - geez when did THAT happen to me!

CAN'T FIGHT THIS FEELING

OK I love drummers - who dosen;t! I use to take drum lessons at BHS and love the drums. My daughter took lessons too. Years ago when I went to Emerson College my cousin Jim majored in Drums at Berklee College of Music. I also had a boyfriend who went to Berkelee he was a Bass Guitarist named Owen Yost. http://owenyost.com/

Owen played ALL around Boston. I swear I went to every club and every gig. He also played and traveled all around Boston with the James Montgomery Band. They even had a gig in the Virgin Island http://www.jamesmontgomery.com/ . I remember Owen flew me out there. It was amazing to be at Rainbow Beach where the was aqua water, the sand was white and tropical trees were breath taking!. Thanks for the memories!

REO Speedwagon
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/REO_Speedwagon

REO Speedwagon is an American rock band that grew in popularity in the Midwestern United States during the 1970s and peaked in the early 1980s. REO Speedwagon hits include "Keep On Loving You" and "Can't Fight This Feeling". Both songs are power ballads, the former being prototypical of the genre and appearing on the group's most commercially successful album, Hi Infidelity, which also included the hit "Take It on the Run," a song that peaked at number five on the U.S. charts.

REO Speedwagon took its name from the REO Speed Wagon, a flatbed truck and fire engine, manufactured by the REO Motor Car Company. ("R.E.O." are initials of the company's founder, Ransom Eli Olds, who also founded Oldsmobile, once a division of General Motors.)
REO Speedwagon was formed by students attending the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois, in the fall of 1967 to play cover songs in campus bars. The first line up consisted of Alan Gratzer on drums and vocals, Neal Doughty on keyboards, Joe Matt on guitar and vocals and Mike Blair on bass and vocals. In the spring of 1968, Terry Luttrell became lead singer, and Bob Crownover and Gregg Philbin replaced Matt and Blair. Joe McCabe played sax at this time until moving to SIU. Crownover played guitar for the group until the summer of 1969 when Bill Fiorio replaced him. Fiorio then departed in late 1969, eventually assuming the name Duke Tumatoe, and went on to form the All Star Frogs. Another guitarist, Steve Scorfina, came aboard briefly, and was replaced by Gary Richrath in late 1970.

Spark! Magazine - A Literay & Artistic Review

Be yourself. Above all, let who you are, what you are, what you believe, shine through every sentence you write, every piece you finish.” John Jakes

The Spark Committee from North Shore Community College sent me this letter below. I submitted four of my poems for consideration and three were chosen for publication.

SEBASTIAN SAND - By: Sherri Raftery January 25, 2003

Footprints decorating
White sand,
Seashells surfing
On aqua water,
Settling down
Across the shore,
Water rippling
Fast, and foamy,
Washing away,
Stealing the décor,
Laughing heard,
In the distance,
Children running,
All about,
Sun melting away,
The morning dew,
Pales filling,
With ocean’s treasures,
Memories,
Reminding us,
Of our day,
On Florida’s,
Sebastian Sand

LIFE UNDER WATER - Sherri Raftery, M. Ed.

Life under water…
Fish swim, swiftly, by my false, fins,
Guppy’s, gills, gulling, in the gallows,
Porpoises, pulsating, and propelling,

Dolphins, dipping and diving,
Migrating, minnows, meandering,
Kips, kicking, kelp,
Starfish, spinning, and spooling,

My body aches like a sting from a jellyfish…
It cuts my heart, like a sharp edge, of an eels bite…

To discover a starfish, clinging to a rock,
With its vacuum like, suction cups,
It’s a jester, in disguise; you long to own it…

But to keep it, means to end its life…
To take it from its natural surroundings…

…Like an unwanted child, from its biological home…

I LOVE YOU THE YELLOWIST - Sherri Raftery, M.Ed. April 29, 2003

I love you the yellowiest, Sabrina, like
A soft pedal, from a GIANT SUNFLOWER,

Like the golden, blond, highlights,
Of a spinning, prima ballerina,

I love you as sweet, as the honey,
That drips, from a honeycomb,

I love you as sharp,
As, a yellow jacket’s sting,

I love you as wide,
As, the tallest cornfield,

I love you as bright,
As, a firefly at night,

I love you
As warm as, the sun,

With all my
MIGHT!

Love, MAMA

MSPCC - April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

“Child abuse casts a shadow the length of a lifetime.” Herbert Ward

I recieved this email today from the MSPCC and am posting it to my BLOG. I was a victim of child abuse and neglect at a time when getting hit was used as a form of "discipline". ''It wasn;t the hitting that was so bad (but when any adult hits a child it hurts!) as much as the intention to be cruel and neglectful and very self serving by the very person who should have loved me and provided for me and my siblings - my own biological mother.

But to say that it was just my biological mother would only be giving half the story - she allowed her male partner to live in our home from the time I was four -years-old until I was nine-years- old. I lived in fear daily from the abuse but nightly I was even more afraid for my life.

I am thankful to the Department of Children and Family Services formerly known as the Department Social Services in Massachusetts for removing me from that environment and placing me in the hands of The Home for Little Wanderers. I know I had a better life because of this early intervention. I give back today by speaking out at events when asked. I share my story because I can (where some children have lost their lives). http://www.thehome.org/

Please spread the word that APRIL IS CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH!!

Massachusetts Society for Prevention of Crulety to Children (MSPCC)

In Massachusetts:
A child is reported abused or neglected every 8 minutes.
A child is born into poverty every three hours.
A child dies before his or her first birthday every day.

http://www.mspcc.org/site/PageServer?pagename=MSPCC_video

At MSPCC, we believe that every child is entitled to a safe and healthy start and we know the best way to provide that start is to reach out to families as soon as possible. Parenting can be a difficult job but effective parenting can be taught. Our programs work.

During this important month, please remember that no parent wakes up in the morning wanting to hurt their child. But as our neighbors, friends and families lose their jobs and worry about their capacity to provide for their family, stress takes its toll.

Each April, leading corporate, civic and philanthropic leaders join MSPCC at the “Together Against Abuse” dinner at the InterContinental Hotel in Boston. Always an inspirational evening, MSPCC invites you to attend.

Until then, there are lots of ways you can support MSPCC:

Check out our exclusive online auction at http://mspcc.convio.net/site/R?i=PAjurHE_vanrKe2Cb7_-DQ.. and starting on April 1 bid on once in a lifetime experiences such as a trip to Broadway’s TONY awards, a level one national sports event or even a private cooking lesson for four people. Then look forward to even more exciting items during our silent auction at the live event.

Tune into our media sponsor WBUR, 90.9 FM, to catch one of the many Public Service Announcements promoting “Together Against Abuse”.

Thank you to WBUR (90.9 FM - Boston’s NPR News Source) and all our Corporate Sponsors for their generosity andtheir commitment to ending the abuse and neglect of children. www.wbur.org/

To discipline thus means to instruct a person or animal to follow a particular code of conduct, or to adhere to a certain "order." Consequently, "in the field of child development, discipline refers to methods of modeling character and of teaching self-control and acceptable behavior.

My Friend, Dr. Ben Franklin

"Energy and persistence conquer all things". Benjamin Franklin

This is my good friend Dick Elliot, A.K.A - Dr. Ben Franklin. Dick is an actor here in Boston, MASS and has been in many movies, commericals and even the Suffolk University Marketing Material and what a treat that was when I was thinking of applying there for law school and I handed hime the copy. Dick studied for two years at Suffolk for Law School.

Ben/Dick's wife makes his clothes (nicely done I might add) and he walks around the streets of Boston and especially Boston'sFanuiel Hall/Quincy Market Place greeting many tourist who travel ALL around to visit our famous historical city Massachusetts. They also love to get their photo taken with Dr. Ben Franklin.

I REALLY admire Dick/Ben for living the life he wants to live as an actor and performer.
Dick also gets many speaking invites to local schools about the life and times of Dr. Ben Franklin and he knows all of the history some of it even parallels his own. Dick has even spoken outside of the country and the Japanese ladies love him - must be his sparkly blue eyes - they are very catchy!

I was recently invited to attend THE HOME for Little Wanderer;s Annual Cherrystones & Chowda Donor Appreciation Nite at the Union Oyster House where Dick/Ben also frequents.
I was very thrilled to see him there and I introduced him to teh CEO of THE HOME - Joan Wallace Benjamin (no relation) . We took photos with some of the kids, staff and donors too.

And what a stroke of luck Dick/Ben was invited to be a guest at the Annual Voices and Vision's Annual Gala because this year's theme is about AMERICA. I am looking forward to seeing my
friend, Dr. Ben Franlin WOW the crowd as he does what he loves to do!!

Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin Franklin (January 17, 1706 [O.S. January 6, 1705] – April 17, 1790) was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America. A noted polymath, Franklin was a leading author and printer, satirist, political theorist, politician, scientist, inventor, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat. As a scientist, he was a major figure in the Enlightenment and the history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity. He invented the lightning rod, bifocals, the Franklin stove, a carriage odometer, and the glass 'armonica'. He formed both the first public lending library in America and first fire department in Pennsylvania. He was an early proponent of colonial unity, and as a political writer and activist he supported the idea of an American nation.[1] As a diplomat during the American Revolution he secured the French alliance that helped to make independence of the United States possible.gf

Franklin is credited as being foundational to the roots of American values and character, a marriage of the practical and democratic Puritan values of thrift, hard work, education, community spirit, self-governing institutions, and opposition to authoritarianism both political and religious, with the scientific and tolerant values of the Enlightenment. In the words of Henry Steele Commager, "In Franklin could be merged the virtues of Puritanism without its defects, the illumination of the Enlightenment without its heat."[2] To Walter Isaacson, this makes Franklin, "the most accomplished American of his age and the most influential in inventing the type of society America would become."[3]

Franklin became a newspaper editor, printer, and merchant in Philadelphia, becoming very wealthy, writing and publishing Poor Richard's Almanack and the Pennsylvania Gazette. Franklin was interested in science and technology, and gained international renown for his famous experiments. He played a major role in establishing the University of Pennsylvania and Franklin & Marshall College and was elected the first president of the American Philosophical Society. Franklin became a national hero in America when he spearheaded the effort to have Parliament repeal the unpopular Stamp Act. An accomplished diplomat, he was widely admired among the French as American minister to Paris and was a major figure in the development of positive Franco-American relations. From 1775 to 1776, Franklin was Postmaster General under the Continental Congress and from 1785 to 1788 was President of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania. Toward the end of his life, he became one of the most prominent abolitionists.

His colorful life and legacy of scientific and political achievement, and status as one of America's most influential Founding Fathers, has seen Franklin honored on coinage and money; warships; the names of many towns, counties, educational institutions, namesakes, and companies; and more than two centuries after his death, countless cultural references.

"Cead Mile Failte" - Irish Welcome!

"Cead Mille Failte" - One Hundred Thousand Irish Welcomes!

From the Dublin Penny Journal, Vol. 1, No. 7, August 11, 1832

It is perhaps not generally known from whence the famous expression of Irish hospitality, Cead Mille Failte, was taken. It occurs in the concluding stanza of Eileen a Roon, and is thus translated by Furlong:-

A hundred thousand welcomes,
Eileen a Roon! A hundred thousand welcomes,
Eileen a Roon! Oh! welcome ever more,
With welcomes yet in store,
Till love and life are o'er,
Eileen a Roon!

There are two songs entitled Eileen a Roon, Ellen, the secret treasure of my heart. The old version, from which the above stanza is taken, bears internal evidence of antiquity. The first line of the second stanza of it, "I would spend a cow to entertain thee," proves that it was composed before coined money was in general use. The following is esteemed the most probable account of the circumstances which gave rise to it.

THE IRISH CLADDAGH RING

The Claddagh ring is a traditional Irish ring given in friendship or worn as a wedding ring. The design and customs associated with it originated in the Irish fishing village of Claddagh, located just outside the old walls of the city of Galway. The ring was first produced in the 17th century during the reign of Queen Mary II, though elements of the design are much older.

The Claddah Irish ring has a tradition that dates back to over 300 years. Because of the meaning and significance attached to these Irish Claddah rings, they are also referred to as the Irish friendship rings or the Irish faith rings. Kaisilver creates the best rendition of the Irish claddah rings in sterling silver and gold. Every ring has high end craftsmanship and is hand finished to perfection. You can choose the gemstone of your choice and add more meaning to your Claddah ring by selecting your birthstone as the gemstone for the ring.

Irish Claddah Rings, The History
The origin of the Irish Claddah ring takes us 300 years back in time. The location of this folklore is a small fishing village in Ireland called the Claddah. A local fisherman by the name of Robert Joyce was sold as a slave after his fishing boat was captured by pirates. Working for his master who was a wealthy goldsmith, Robert could not forget his beloved who lived in the Claddah village. It was during his tenure as a slave that Robert Joyce created a very special ring for his beloved.

A few years later Robert was released from slavery and came back home to the Claddah village. He presented the ring to his beloved and they were soon married. Little did he realize that the ring that he created, would grow up to be a legend and worn by people in nations far off from his tiny Claddah fishing village. This is the most trusted record of the origin and history of the Claddah Irish ring.

Answers to Governance Questions

"Courage to Conquer"

Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of meeting locations.

Headquartered in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, the organization has nearly 235,000 members in 11,700 clubs in 92 countries. Since 1924, Toastmasters International has helped people of all backgrounds become more confident in front of an audience.

Our proven educational program is self-paced and affordable. If you are one of our members, congratulations!

"The unprepared speaker has a right to be afraid."
- Dr. Ralph C. Smedley, Founder, Toastmasters

I copied this message from the Toastmasters International Members Group on Face Book "Answers to Governance Reshaping Questions" that was posted by the Toastmasters International Executive Director, Daniel Rex.

"Dear Toastmasters",

"In past weeks, we have received feedback from a few of our members expressing displeasure and concern about some of the provisions of Proposal A, Global Representation and Support, which will be voted on at the International Convention in August 2009. At World Headquarters, we always listen very carefully to what members tell us, and this proposal is no exception. Unfortunately, much of the feedback we’ve received includes false statements and misunderstandings about the nature of the governance reshaping proposal".

"We’ve read about rumors that the organization is moving to a for-profit enterprise; that the whole purpose of governance reshaping is to boost attendance at the International Convention; that we’re merely accommodating the needs of Districts Not Assigned to Regions (DNAR) to the detriment of the rest of the organization; the list goes on. All of these rumors, and many more like them, are completely false. The purpose of governance reshaping is to improve the way the organization is structured on a global scale, ultimately enhancing service to the member. In this message, I hope to address some of the concerns that members have raised and clear up some common misconceptions about the proposal. In the coming weeks and months, complete information will be presented to the entire membership, providing the knowledge needed to make an informed decision before the vote.Global GrowthOne of the driving factors behind the development of the governance reshaping proposal is the worldwide growth of the organization".
"There are now more than 12,500 clubs and nearly 250,000 members in more than 90 countries. The current organizational structure, which does not include any regional-level structure or support outside of North America, has not effectively accommodated this growth. In 2005, the governance reshaping process was initiated with the objective of addressing global representation and equitable support for all Toastmasters members, clubs and officers, regardless of geographic location".

"To achieve this objective, the proposal includes provisions for the re-drawing of the regional map, and extending it to include regions for clubs that are not currently part of our regional structure. As soon as the Board began to consider this issue, it became clear that expanding the structure of the organization meant we had to start looking for ways to maximize our efficiency. It was in this spirit that the Board began to look at the region conferences, and determine whether the business that is conducted there could be conducted in a way that brought the biggest benefit to the largest number of members".

"As we weighed the benefits provided to the relatively small number of members who attend region conferences against the benefits that could be provided to district officers and the membership as a whole by replacing region conferences with a more efficient training and support mechanism, we opted in favor of the latter.TrainingToday, Toastmasters provides face-to-face training for district leadership teams at the region conferences (with the exception of the DNAR districts) and at mid-year".

"Unfortunately, these two events don’t provide all the information that our district officers need to be successful. In the proposed model, district leaders would be trained year-round using a combination of convenient e-learning modules and traditional face-to-face sessions, resulting in a larger number of leaders trained more conveniently, efficiently and effectively than before. Also, this training model will allow a more consistent message to be delivered, which will result in better trained officers leading to improved service to the member".

"Toastmasters International currently pays the travel (airfare or mileage) for the district governor and lt. governors to the region conference while districts reimburse those expenses for mid-year. In the proposed model, TI would pay for these same officers to travel to the International Convention, where they would receive training and experience the camaraderie, personal ties, and face-to-face support that have long been hallmarks of Toastmasters training. In place of the June training that currently exists, new district officers would be presented with a number of e-learning opportunities that they could complete at their leisure and repeat as often as necessary. Face-to-face mid-year training would continue much as it does today, with attendees sharing problems and developing solutions together in a relaxed and cordial atmosphere".

The primary difference:
Instead of districts paying for travel to mid-year training, TI would pay. Some have expressed concern that the new district officer training that would take place at the International Convention would be too big, and that it will be difficult to achieve the level of training support that currently occurs at the region conference training. To answer this concern, I would like to point out that the training sessions planned for the International Convention will incorporate many opportunities for breaking out into smaller groups and networking with peers".

Speech Contests:
"Another important event that takes place at the region conferences is the International Speech Contest. Currently, all North American contestants compete at the region conferences, while the DNAR contestants compete at the International Convention. In the proposed solution, nine semi-final speech contests would be held – most likely on Thursday night – at the International Convention, with each district-level winner assigned at random to one of the contests. This would result in fair and equal treatment for all contestants. All speech contest semi-finalists would receive reimbursement from TI for travel to the International Convention, just as they do now for travel to the region conference".

The Right Change, at the Right Time:
"What about today’s world is still the same as it was 20 years ago? Most of us didn’t have cell phones or personal computers. If someone had told us that we would do most of our holiday shopping on the Internet, we would have laughed – not because we thought we wouldn’t, but because we would have had no idea what the “Internet” was. Today’s world is markedly different than 1989. Yet some members believe that Toastmasters should always remain the same".

"E-learning is a perfect example of the kind of change that some members have trouble believing in. Yet the whole world is moving to an e-learning model for volunteer training – not only because it is a more efficient way to train more people over greater geographical distances, but also because it results in better training, better retention rates, and an overall improved learning experience. It is time Toastmasters moved to this model for volunteer training, too.As for region conferences – it’s abundantly clear that some Toastmasters have developed a deep emotional attachment to these events, and many have expressed the desire to put this matter to a vote of the entire membership. However, the matter of region conferences is in the policies of the organization, and as such, it is under the jurisdiction of the Board of Directors. The Board is elected by the membership and represents the interests of the entire organization".

"Other issues, such as the creation of new regions and the establishment of the International Leadership Committee (ILC), are bylaws issues that must be brought to a vote of the membership as a whole. I have attended more than 35 region conferences, trained hundreds of district officers, and enjoyed the camaraderie of the experience. Each year, I’ve looked forward to attending these events with you. However, when we distance ourselves from our emotional involvement in these issues, we can perhaps see this matter in a new light and gain a deeper understanding of the reasons behind these important decisions".

"At the heart of the matter is the club experience – the positive results that each person receives from attending meetings, giving speeches, and improving communication and leadership skills. And that’s the bottom line for all of us.In the coming weeks we will provide additional information to members, clubs and officers around the world. Presentations and discussions will be held at many district conferences and at region conferences".

Some TM members responses:

"Daniel, I'm so glad to see e-learning taking such a priority for the organization. Has the board considered webcasting the International Convention / Speech Contest"? Dwayne Windham

===

"Dan, I appreciate you taking the time to address certain issues regarding the proposed governance changes. What I still have not seen addressed are the concerns raised (not out of misinformation, misunderstanding, or emotionalism) regarding:A. The ILC proposal which puts more power in the boards hands over who will be able to runB. The continuing separation between leadership and membership, which lends itself to the creation of a have and have-not aristocracyC. The loss in opportunities for leadership, speaking opportunities, and inter-district relationships into the void created by disposing of Region ConferencesI appreciate the new fairness given to the contests - I've certainly enjoyed my times as a competitor over the years - but none of my concerns, as well as those of most of those I've spoken with, are based in the contest.I would think Toastmasters would be able to alter its Region structure, leadership model, and global mission without taking away conferences that can be improved rather than replaced, and taking more power away from the voting member by reducing our choices at the ID level.Regardless of the end results, I fully support Toastmasters, and would hope you, the Top 3, and the Board of Directors value the opinions and communications of all its members, regardless of our stance on the issues. After all, what is leadership without communication"?
Rich Hopkins (Spokane, WA)

"Daniel; Thank you for your response and explanation. One thing not addressed, which I raised, is the costs of the new contest model. With 14 regions and regional conferences and contests, TI would only have to pay for 14 winners to travel to the International Conventions. With the new model, TI will have to pay travel expenses for 80+ District winners to the convention. That strikes me as a huge expense to underwrite. And therein lies the crux of my concern about the changes - cost. And that is certainly not an emotional response". Phyrne Parker (Toronto, ON)
