Farewell PDG, Dr. Bettye Underhill, DTM

Photo: D31 LGM, Bil Lewis, DTM, son of D31, DPG, Dr. Bettye Underhill, DTM, D31, PDG, Charlie Keane, DTM

"May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be ever at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rain fall softly on your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the hollow of his hand". Irish Blessing

I got the call yesterday from Bil Lewis my friend who is currently serving as the District 31 Lt. Governor of Education & Training that his Mother our District 31 First Female Governor, PDG, Dr. Bettye Underhill, DTM passed on. I cried and asked if he would be willing to pay a tribute at our Spring 2009 Conference on Saturday May 9, 2009. We are already paying tribute to PDG, Charlie Keane, DTM who passed away this year as well. Charlie and Bettye were good friends and if they only realized that each passed just months from one another - that is almost remarkable.

I met Bettye at our Fall 2007 Conference when I was serving as the Lt. Governor of Marketing because I had invited her to attend our Conference at the request of the 2007-2008 District Governor, Cherylle Garnes, DTM. We planned on having Bettye present Bil, her son with his DTM - Distinguished Toastmasters Medal. I also had a Boston State House Citation made for Bettye from my State Representative Mark Falzone.
Bettye was an excellent addition to our D31 Conference especially since she paved the way as a First Female District Governor in District 31 which covers Eastern Massachusetts and the entire state of Rhode Island. On Saturday May 9, 2009 I am also running for the District 31 Governors seat. I know I have your blessing Bettye and YOU have mine!

-----

Please note this message was written on February 15, 2009 is from the District 31 Lt. Governor of Marketing, Bil Lewis - son of Bettye Underhill, District 31 Governor, 1982-83.

My mother, who loved Toastmasters and this district above everything, is fading. They are telling me that she probably has 2-10 weeks left. She was always so proud of district 31 and never ceased to give me good advice. It was she who got me into Toastmasters back in graduate school. Many of you met her when she came out in '07 to present me with my DTM--a highlight of both her life and mine.

She was overjoyed when I decided to run for district office and filled me with campaigning secrets. She was the consummate Toastmaster
.

Mom was first and foremost an educator. She was head of the Early ChildhoodEducation Department that Santa Ana College in Southern California andremained close to education ever since, serving on boards and directing programs.

All of her children followed in her footsteps in some fashion. My sister teaches High School Chemistry, my 1/2 brother teaches religion, I have taught all grades through graduate school, and my brother teaches horsemanship. We are who we are because of her.

I just spoke to mom. She's awake and lucid. She's largely bed-ridden, but is gladly accepting calls. If you'd like to give her a ring, I'm sure she'd appreciate it. Drop me a line and I'll give you her number. 617-501-3692-Bil Lewis, DTMD31 2008-2009 LGMbil@lambdacs.com

LaShunda Rundles is GOING HOME!!

TWO LADY CHAMPS who show us they EACH have the COURAGE TO CONQUER!!

Photo Lt-Rt
2008-2009 Toastmasters International President, Jana Barnhill and the 2008 World Champion of Public Speaking, LaShunda Rundles

"COURAGE TO CONQUER", is the 2008-2009 International President, Jana Barnhill's theme this year.

I recieved an email via Facebook from the 2008 WCPS, LaShunda Rundles this morning! I am happy to report that LaShunda is GOING HOME! Here is the message from my friend who is still recovering but has the COURAGE TO CONQUER and show the world that she is a CHAMPION!!

Sherri,

Hello there Princess! Sorry for the slow response but hopefully you can understand. I may be going home in the next couple of weeks so keep me in your prayers. I still will need some home health and rehab for a while but home is home. I only weigh about 95 pounds so I am learning how to eat and retrain my gut to accept it. I have a feeding tube and I will have to supplement for a while, but me still being here is literally a miracle. Thank you for your blog updates and for being such a powerhouse of a woman. God bless you and I hope to keep giving you positive progress.

All my heart,
LaShunda

-----

Welcome Home Sist'ha!

Friends - Please continue to keep LaShunda in your healing prayers!

I hope I do not sound too selffish but I really am hoping LaShunda is well enough to attend the 2009 Toastmasters International Convention at Foxwoods in Connecticut this August because I would really love to give her a hug again!! And her sister Sonya TOO!!

Lady Scorpions WIN 2-0 !

"Soccer is not just about scoring goals - it’s about winning".

Today I coached the Lady Scorpions - thankfully with the help of a very experienced Saugus Youth Soccer Coach - Tom - because my Assistant Coach (whose daughter is also on the team) took his family to Florida for spring vacation (so lucky!) High five to Coach Tom for sharing your tips and time!!!

We had six players and competing against another U-12 Girls team up in West Newbury, MA. I must admit going in we were the "underdogs" - the other team had eight players which meant they would have subs to replace their tired players. One of our goalies came to the game late - but we were VERY thankful to see her arrive!

We only had two practices and our fist game which was suppose to be Saturday April 4, 2009 was cancelled due to the rains and the wet fields. So we have NOT had much time to get into shape or to go over passing and kicking skills. Plus two of our new players have NEVER even played on a team before and are not very familiar with the rules or the positions of the game.

I am happy to report that we did NOT let the other team score thanks to our goalies and defense and we also scored two goals thanks to our offense! Pretty remarkable for our first game -well techincally our second - but first playing as a TEAM!

Really reaffirms that I am glad I stepped up the this very important leadership role in my local community to coach the U-12 Lady Scorpions Team.

I am a very Proud Soccer Coach & Parent! ...But know this - I would be equally proud even if we did NOT score or allowed the other team to score.

BUT it sure is fun to score and WIN!

GO LADY SCORPIONS!!

How about YOU - are you in it to WIN IT?

Adam Lambert IS an American Adol

I missed last nights performances of American Idol because I was at the Toastmasters District 31 Division A & B Speech Contest - but thanks to google searches and the internet I was able to find BORN TO BE WILD - By Adam Lambert on UTUBE! I knew he ROCKED it because my eleven-year-old, daughter Sabrina reported to me that he "did well Mom".

So this morning I went looking for last nite's SHOW TUNE by Adam and I found it with a BUNCH of other gems that he has performed. I added the links for your review (I am STILL not sure how to upload videos to Blogger - any pointers would be great - even though I follow the directions - I think I am still missing a step). And to add an little off the track tidbit - my maternal grandmothers maiden name was Lamberti

I believe that Adam Lambert IS the favorite to win American Idol and he will win this season - but seriously even if he DOESN'T win Idol - it is evident that he will have an incredible singing and performing career - well - like he already has! And being on Broadyway in Wicked is just ONE of the many to add to his aresnol.

I am thrilled to see a young performer get out their and PERFORM!
The judges and audience get it right with the Standing OVATIONS!!
GO ADAM!!

What your YOU DOING to FIND YOUR PLATFORM and express yourself through the arts?

2009-2010 District 31 Governor - Nomination

As the district's cheif executive officer, the district governor directs the district in a way that fosters strong clubs...the Governor achieves the mission of the district in a manner that motivates volunteer leaders and promotes a standard of excellence

I met with the District 31 Toastmasters Nomination Committee on Tuesday March 31st at 6:00 PM in the Watertown Public Library. This is was my third meeting of its kind for a district leadership office. The first time I met with the 2007-2008 Committee for the office of Lt. Governor of Marketing and the second time I met with the 2008-2009 Committee of Lt. Governor of Education & Training.

I enjoyed meeting with the committee. I was excited, elated and I could hardly believe the Nomiation Meeting finally arrived and was over in about fifteen minutes! It was like being around very supportive friends - well because they all are. I brought excellent recommendations and presented my packets to the five member board. The Nomination Chair, Past District 31 Governor, Thomas Weber, DTM asked me if I had an opening statement. Yes I did...I delivered it with confidence. I answered all the questions from the committee and then gave a closing statement. I am as ready as I can be. The two offices of Lt. Governors have helped me prepare.

This photo of the District Governor Plaque is awarded to someone who serves a successful term as District Governor. Let;s hope it will be hanging on my wall with the rest of my plaques on July 1, 2010! But first I must (eagerly) await the Nomination Report and then of course the Executive Committee's vote at the District 31 Spring 2009 Conference - Business Meeting around 1:00 PM on Saturday May 9, 2009.

To register for the District 31 Conference at the Best Western in Marlborough, MASS

April FOOLS!!

"April Fools MOM"!, Sabrina Raftery

She got me this morning! OH YEA! I thought I got her but REALLY she got me.

This morning I went to wake Sabrina up for school. I sat on her bed and said "Sabrina school was cancelled because it is snowing out". She moved the shade and looked out the window and said "NO SAH"!

Then she got up and said. "Lets go have breakfast together". We went to the kitchen counter and she had the bowels ready. I should have known that she was up to something the night before because she never puts the cereal boxes out on the counter - in fact NOTHING can be out on the counter! I know a little OCD (not ME! - HER!)

Sabrina then waited for me to cut up banana slices into each of our bowels. Then I picked up one of the boxes and started to pour it into my bowel... and noticed it was the WRONG cereal. When I looked in the box and said "wait a minute..." and she began laughing and said, "April FOOLS MOM".

Yup I thought I FOOLED her but she got me and got me good! Thats my girl!

Happy April Fools Day - I Hope you got FOOLED by someone you love like I did!

APRIL FOOLS

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_Fools

April Fools' Day or All Fools' Day, although not a holiday in its own right, is a notable day celebrated in many countries on April 1. The day is marked by the commission of hoaxes and other practical jokes of varying sophistication on friends, family members, enemies, and neighbors, or sending them on a fool's errand, the aim of which is to embarrass the gullible. Traditionally, in some countries, the jokes only last until noon: like UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa, someone who plays a trick after noon is called an "April Fool".[1] Elsewhere, such as in Ireland, France, and the USA, the jokes last all day.
