Dalton Sherman - KEYNOTE ADDRESS!

“There are three things to aim at in public speaking: first, to get into your subject, then to get your subject into yourself, and lastly, to get your subject into the heart of your audience” Alexander Gregg

This video link is of Dalton Sherman a 10-year-old 5th grade student from Dallas, TX who is delivering the Keynote Address for the entire Charles Rise Learning Center.

http://www.dallasisd.org/keynote.htm

Dalton;s delivery is an excellent example of how a speaker connects and reaches the audience - he got them fired up - just by begin natural - and expressing his appreciation and he certainly knew his subject.

Calgary - Candidate's Corner - Meeting Tim Swearingen, Region III, ID

"The greatest reward you can have as a leader is the look of respect. The key to a successful leader is to earn that respect not because of rank but because you are a person of character" Richard Winters

I really love this quote and I really appreciate that it was hand written on a card sent to me by the newly elected Region III, International Director, Toastmaster, Tim Swearingen, DTM - who also served as the District 3 Governor in Phoenix Arizona. http://www.aztoastmasters.org/

I met Tim during the Calgary 2008 International Convention at his campaign table along with his campaign posse - Nancy Star-Cassidy, Ralph Wallace and Rose Beeson!! (Oh and what’s not to love about Rose, she is a doll and is also a fellow Emersonian)(See us in the photo together at the President;s Dance!)!! http://rosebeeson.typepad.com/my_weblog/2007/11/beesons-13-rule.html

Tim did an incredible job during the “Candidate’s Showcase”. I had a smile on my face from the time his name was announced, by Region Vii International Director, Val Albert, DTM and he walked into the room with his campaign manager, passed the many Region III and Region Vii District Officers, up the staircase and onto the Candidate's stage.

Tim was a “Candidate Champion”! He answered all the questions with confidence and conviction that were asked of each Candidate. He looked at us like he BELONGED on the BOARD and It was no surprise at the Business Meeting that he was elected to the BOARD! WELL DONE TIM!!

And now as the International Director, Tim is serving the following Districts in Region III; District 3 Arizona, District 16 Oklahoma, District 23 New Mexico; El Paso County, Texas, District 25 North Central Texas ,District 26 Colorado, Eastern Wyoming, Western Nebraska, District 44 Western Texas; Texas County, Oklahoma, District 50 Northeastern Texas; Shreveport, Louisiana, District 55 Austin, Corpus Christi, San Antonio and Southcentral Texas, District 56 Houston
http://www.region3tm.org/

Congrats Tim You Rocked It! OH and another reason Tim Rocks is HE LOVES and BLOGS about the Boston Red Sox!! http://timswearingen.typepad.com/

Now I give credit to ANYONE who steps up to leadership positions and runs to serve. But take it from me – be prepared to answer the questions!

I must admit not all of the candidates rocked it during the Calgary "Candidate’s Showcase" and at that level YOU MUST be prepared if you want to be taken seriously, especially after serving as a District Governor and hopefully (although not a requirement - as the top two Lt’s of Marketing and Education & Training).

When a candidate says – “skip the question”, “pass” “next question” it is tough to witness AND I speak from experience of a time when I wasn’t prepared a few years ago when I ran for the Saugus School Committee in my local town of Saugus. I was invited to attend the "Candidate’s Night" held at the Saugus Town Hall and taped live by the local cable station.

I did great with my opening and introducing myself – I certainly had great qualifications. BUT when the questions came my way I was not prepared to answer them. I didn’t know all the proper facts and admittedly I was not completely familiar with the Saugus public school issues because my daughter attends a private Catholic School in another town. Makes you wonder why I ran huh?

I learned a valuable lesson by taking a step towards leadership. I learned what I needed to improve on and turned those corrections into my strengths by joining Toastmasters.

Today if I run for anything again I will do my research, rehearse my speech and prepare myself before the big "Candidate's Day"! Hope you do too!

Have you ever run for any type of office?
Congrats if you have!
If you did - were you prepared?
Want to learn how to prepare to speak in front of others?

Take the first step by “stepping up to leadership roles” in your local community, at your place of employment, for your children’s school PTO, PTA, coach a sport, help at your place of worship, or any place where you can help lead and of course join a local Toastmasters Club. www.toastmasters.org

I’m Guilty!!

“Without obsession, life is nothing”. John Waters

I am guilty of two TV obsessions on Monday nights! Prison Break - with hottie Michael Scofield and Raising the Bar with hottie Jerry Kellerman.

And since I am not sure how to add videos yet (cuz I just learned how to download -- or is it upload -- pictures) I am posting these links for those of you who would like to peek at video clips of these dramas that I am hooked on! Prison Break is full of action and adventure - like a man;s soap opera and Raising the Bar has an interesting dynamic especially the taunting relationship with the Gerry and the Judge.

And can I say they are hot outloud - I mean they are a little young for me – but hey I can look right(and dream)? Let me know if you watch them too! Or what do you watch and WHY?

http://www.fox.com/prisonbreak/info/

“PRISON BREAK, shot in Los Angeles, is an Adelstein-Parouse Production in association with 20th Century Fox Television. Paul T. Scheuring, Matt Olmstead, Kevin Hooks, Marty Adelstein, Dawn Parouse, Neal Moritz and Brett Ratner are executive producers. Zack Estrin and Nick Santora are co-executive producers”.
http://www.fox.com/prisonbreak/toyota/

“The greatest escape on television continues as PRISON BREAK enters its nail-biting, action-packed fourth season”.

http://www.fox.com/fod/play.php?sh=prison

Wentworth Miller who plays Michael Scolfield discusses how he and his brother Lincoln were abandoned by their father – and Michael grows up in the foster care system – hmm I can certainly identify with that.

http://www.fox.com/fod/play.php?sh=prison&ep=1221514260341

Raising the Bar
“RAISING THE BAR not only looks at courtroom battles but also the relationships among people on different sides. “The primary characters are a group of young public defenders and prosecutors who go up against each other during the day, but they’re friends and hang out with each other at night,” Bochco says. “They argue and negotiate with each other. They are dedicated players within what we feel is a broken criminal justice system.”

"Stephen Bochco points out that the series strives to provide a balanced view of the system and those who work within it. “RAISING THE BAR is not geared specifically toward the public defenders or the prosecutors,” he says. “We try to give equal time to both points of view, with an eye toward revealing the extent to which the system doesn’t work very well. It certainly doesn’t have all that much to do with justice. It has more to do with keeping the conveyor belt turning, the idea that if every case in the system goes to trial, the system grinds to a halt.”

Mark-Paul Gosselaar - - Jerry Kellerman - “In RAISING THE BAR, Gosselaar plays Jerry Kellerman, an idealistic public defender who will stop at nothing to help those who cannot help themselves. Reuben plays Rosalind Whitman, Jerry’s passionate and protective”. “ Anyone facing prosecution would be lucky to have Jerry Kellerman as a public defender. His passion and energy are matched by his unwavering devotion to securing justice for all. He will not hesitate to stand up to even the most ruthless judge if he thinks his client is not being treated fairly. He bristles when others manipulate the system at the expense of those he is trying to defend.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar’s professional career includes extensive work in films and television. He starred with Geena Davis in Commander in Chief, a series executive produced by Steven Bochco. Gosselaar also starred as Detective John Clark in Bochco’s critically acclaimed drama series NYPD Blue.

Gosselaar’s other credits include the television movies Atomic Twister, The Princess and the Marine, For the Love of Nancy, Saved By the Bell: Wedding in Las Vegas, She Cried No, Dying to Belong and Born into Exile, as well as the popular teen sitcom Saved by the Bell. On the big screen, Gosselaar starred in Dead Man on Campus, as well as the independent films Beer Money and Sticks and Stones.

Gosselaar’s interests include hockey, motorcycle racing and motorcross racing. He is also an avid pilot.

Riding in Idaho

Sabrina, Sandi and I riding on Sandi's farm in Idaho

Horses make a landscape look beautiful”
Alice Walker quotes (American writer, b.1944)

YE’AAAYA – some photos have finally been forwarded to me and I am eager to share them.

After the Toastmasters International Convention in Calgary I took an additional mini-three-day vacation at the invitation of the District 31 Lt. Governor of Marketing, Bil Lewis to visit his family in Twin Lakes Idaho. (and for those of you who have asked and wondered – Bil is like a broth’ha from anoth’ha moth’ha).

I was already exhausted after a long and enjoyable week of “Get Paid to Speak CHAMP Book Camp”, and the Toastmasters International Convention but I couldn’t resist an offer to visit another state that I haven’t been to yet and with the added bonus of letting my ten-year-old daughter, Sabrina (Ms. Independent) fly across the United States to the Spokane Washington Airport and enjoy this mini-trip to Idaho too!
The Toastmasters Convention ended on a high note – literally with “closing ceremonies” of The President’s Dance, evening SINGING at the Sand Stone Lounge.

It was bitter sweet – my final night at the Hyatt Regency – staying there from Tuesday August 12th and then packing up Sunday August 17th. Bil’s brother Sandi drove up from Idaho in his pickup truck on Saturday and we loaded our luggage and then sat down to a delicious, buffet at the Thomas Regional Canadian Cuisine on 112 Stephen Avenue - which is attached to the Hyatt Regency on 700 Center Street SE in Calgary Alberta Canada.

It was a long eight hour ride, bumpy, ride, hearing the loud rattling truck and creaky door while observing the bug guts splashed on the win shield, driving past many, many, many trees, mountains and horses, cows, goats along the trip.

We when arrived at Sandi’s farm we were greeted by his two dogs, two cats and eight horses!

This was a great little get away. If you have never rode on a horse - give it a try!

PTO Today – Public Speaking Article

“… sometimes what you’re think you’re saying may not be what other people are hearing, so it’s good to say it out loud in front of others” Sherri Raftery, member of the St. Pius V. School PTO Board, Lynn, Mass.

On Thrusday June 12, 2008 I woke up to this email.

Subject: article on public speaking

Hi Sherri,

I'm working on an article about public speaking for PTO Today magazine (www.ptotoday.com ), which is targeted to leaders of PTOs and PTAs. I found your blog in an online search, and because of your involvement in Toastmasters and a PTO, I'd like to talk with you for the article. The article will provide tips for parent group leaders that may be about to give their first public speech in many years. In particular, it will focus on preparing to give a speech and ways to calm nerves.

Would you be available to talk on the phone sometime in the next week or so? I'd be glad to schedule a time in the evening or weekend, if that's more convenient for you.

Thanks,

Emily Graham
Senior Editor
PTO Today
www.ptotoday.com

After my trip to Calgary and Washington I finally started going over my piled high mail – AND GUESS WHAT !! ?? It's here!! It's here!! In a large white envelope from PTO Today I received my copy of the PTO Today magazine!!

The PTO Today Website also has the article but there is limited access if you are not member.
www.ptotoday.com

I emailed Emily yesterday and asked if I could use a link of the article on my blog and YES - she sent me this link today!!

To read the article go to this link:

http://www.ptotoday.com/pto-today-articles/article/677-public-speaking-overcome-the-jitters

This is my first big (well big for me) magazine interview and it was unsolicited (I was googled by Emily!)- but now that I like how it feels to be "interviewed" and "quoted" - what's stopping me from contacting other magazines and sharing more about public speaking and other topics?? !! What's stopping YOU!?

Thanks Emily for the opportunity to be in the PTO Today magazine and share some of my public speaking tips with other Parents, Teachers, Students and others! And as Toastmasters Immediate Past International President, Chris Ford, DTM would say "YIIIIIPPPPYYYYYY"!!!

L.E.K Consulting Club # 1174682 “Chartering Ceremony”

L.E.K Consulting Club # 1174682 “Chartering Ceremony”
Vanessa Hsieh, Club President of L.E.K. Consultants being presented a Chartering Banner by Past District Governor, Cherylle Garnes, DTM during the Chartering Ceremony.

“The beginning is the most important part of the work.”
Plato (Ancient Greek Philosopher He was the world's most influential philosopher. 428 BC-348 BC)

Today – Tuesday September 16, 2008 we celebrated the “Chartering Ceremony” of L.E.K. Consultants Club # 1174682 at the historical Omini Parker House at 60 School Street in Boston, MA at 12:00 noon while enjoyed a catered Chinese lunch. http://www.lek.com/

Performing a Chartering Ceremony is a perfect way to acknowledge a new club to our District 31 (which covers eastern Massachusetts to Worcester and the entire State of Rhode Island). And since L.E.K. Consultants Chartered during my term as the 2007-2008 Lt. Governor of Marketing I was in charge of making sure we following through with planning the chartering event.

The outgoing District Governor, Cherylle Garnes, DTM also assisted with the ceremony and we presented certificates to each chartered member in attendance, gave the Club President, Vanessa a Toastmasters Banner, a club Charter certificate and then performed an installation (induction) of club officers.

Also in attendance was the incoming District Governor, current Lt. Governor of Marketing, Bil Lewis, Club Mentor Susan Belisle (who works at the Federal Reserve Bank) and a few other Toastmasters who were on my Marketing Team, Past District Governor, Ruth Levitsky (who works at M.I.T.) and Julia Grant (who works at D.E.P.).

It was a quick ceremony and Vanessa asked two Table Topic questions just to give non-toastmasters an idea of what a mini Demo meeting. Table Topics helps members improve their impromptu skills, which include critical thinking, listening and speaking “off the cuff”.

I thought it was a nice touch to hear a “call to action” with “if any other LEK Office would like to join a club or begin (charter) a club – we would be happy to assist”!

“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.”
Jim Rohn quotes (American Speaker and Author. He is famous for motivational audio programs for Business and Life.

The only improvement that I could suggest would be to work on their repetitive “Ums”, “Ahs” – but that will come with time and the more they attend meetings – the better their public speaking skills will improve!

Now - I was supposed to give a toast today but sometimes it is best to be flexible. So now I will give a quick toast. “To LEK – May you continue to Charter new waters and pick up many more passengers along your journey” “Here” ! “Here”! …or as we say in Boston “Hea’ya”! “Hea’ya”!

“A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.
Lao Tzu quotes (Chinese taoist Philosopher, founder of Taoism, wrote "Tao Te Ching" (also "The Book of the Way"). 600 BC-531 BC)

September 11th

"God bless the fallen, their families and all who sacrifice for freedom and liberty,"
Gordon England, Deputy Secretary of Defense,

Americans mark 9/11 anniversary with moment of silence - In New York, relatives of victims killed at the World Trade Center observed a moment of silence to mark the seventh anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. http://www.gulfnews.com/world/U.S.A/10244223.html

As I think back on 911 I am sadden by the horrific pictures and stories that were captured by the media, the newspapers, the television and the radio. I cried and wanted to help those people, those families. I felt helpless...

Then I remembered how I lived with a "domestic terrorist" for most of my childhood in my biological family. I know first hand how it was to be tortured everyday - and the very person who was suppose to protect me (My MOM) "DIDN'T".

Years later I found myself in a domestically abusive relationship - and learned that I was repeating patterns from my past - but THANKFULLY with the help of many community resources and the willingness to change - I got away.

Today I speak out about domestic violence so that I can give back what was given to me. More importantly I speak out because I am still alive...not every woman/person makes it out alive.

If you or someone you know is in a domestic violent relationship - there are many resources. The National Domestic Violence Hotline - http://www.ndvh.org/

Or you could offer to volunteer like I did - on the Hotline, as a legal advocate in court - assisting with restraining orders, or evening planning events.

Or you could even help by donating clothing, toys, gift cards or money.

Let me thank some in my local area that were very instrumental in helping me.

September 11 attacks
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_11,_2001_attacks

The September 11 attacks (often referred to as 9/11) were a series of coordinated suicide attacks by al-Qaeda upon the United States on September 11, 2001. On that morning, nineteen Islamist terrorists affiliated with al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners.[1][2] The hijackers intentionally crashed two of the airliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, killing everyone on board and many others working in the building, causing both buildings to collapse within two hours, destroying at least two nearby buildings and damaging others. The hijackers crashed a third airliner into the Pentagon. The fourth plane crashed into a field near Shanksville in rural Somerset County, Pennsylvania, after some of its passengers and flight crew attempted to retake control of the plane, which the hijackers had redirected toward Washington, D.C. There are no known survivors from any of the flights.

Excluding the 19 hijackers, 2,974 people died in the attacks. Another 24 are missing and presumed dead.[3][4] The overwhelming majority of casualties were civilians, including nationals of over 90 different countries. In addition, the death of at least one person from lung disease was ruled by a medical examiner to be a result of exposure to dust from the World Trade Center's collapse, as rescue and recovery workers were exposed to airborne contaminants following the buildings' collapse.
The United States responded to the attacks by launching a War on Terrorism, invading Afghanistan to depose the Taliban, who had harbored al-Qaeda terrorists, and enacting the USA PATRIOT Act. Many other nations also strengthened their anti-terrorism legislation and expanded law enforcement powers. Stock exchanges closed for almost a week, and posted enormous losses upon reopening, especially in the airline and insurance industries. The economy of Lower Manhattan ground to a halt, as billions of dollars in office space was damaged or destroyed.

The damage to the Pentagon was cleared and repaired within a year, and a small memorial was built on the site. Rebuilding the World Trade Center site has proven more difficult, with controversy over possible designs as well as the pace of construction. Construction delays, revised cost estimates, security concerns, and public criticism have all led to changes and delays to the final plans in rebuilding the complex to this day.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domestic_violence

"Domestic disturbance" redirects here. For the 2001 film, see Domestic Disturbance.
Domestic violence (also known as domestic abuse or spousal abuse) occurs when a family member, partner or ex-partner attempts to physically or psychologically dominate another. Domestic violence often refers to violence between spouses, or spousal abuse but can also include cohabitants and non-married intimate partners. Domestic violence occurs in all cultures; people of all races, ethnicities, religions, sexes and classes can be perpetrators of domestic violence. Domestic violence is perpetrated by both men and women.

Domestic violence has many forms, including physical violence, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, intimidation, economic deprivation, and threats of violence. Violence can be criminal and includes physical assault (hitting, pushing, shoving, etc.), sexual abuse (unwanted or forced sexual activity), and stalking. Although emotional, psychological and financial abuse are not criminal behaviors, they are forms of abuse and can lead to criminal violence. There are a number of dimensions including mode - physical, psychological, sexual and/or social; frequency - on/off, occasional, chronic; and severity – in terms of both psychological or physical harm and the need for treatment – transitory or permanent injury – mild, moderate, severe up to homicide.

An important componet of domestic violence, often ignored is the realm of passive abuse, leading to violence. [1]Passive abuse is covert, subtle and veiled. This includes victimization, procrastination, forgetfulness, ambiguity, neglect, spiritual and intellectual abuse.[2]

Recent attention to domestic violence began in the women's movement, particularly feminism and women's rights, in the 1970s, as concern about wives being beaten by their husbands gained attention. Awareness and documentation of domestic violence differs from country to country. Estimates are that only about a third of cases of domestic violence are actually reported in the United States and the United Kingdom. According to the Centers for Disease Control, domestic violence is a serious, preventable public health problem affecting more than 32 million Americans, or more than 10% of the U.S. population.[3]

Popular emphasis has tended to be on women as the victims of domestic violence. However, with the rise of the men's movement, and particularly masculism and men's rights, there is now advocacy for men victimized by women. Various reports of hospital emergency room visits pertaining to domestic violence indicate that physically abused men represent just over one-third of the total patients admitted.

D31 WCPS Competitors & Champs

“Great champions have an enormous sense of pride. The people who excel are those who are driven to show the world and prove to themselves just how good they are”. Nancy Lopez

“Feedback is the breakfast of champions.” Ken Blanchard

Toastmaster members from District 31 have competed in both the Regional Vii and International Speech Contests since the 1950’s. Four have even won the First, Second and Third Place title of “World Champions of Public Speaking” especially during the past eight (8) years.

D31 has had two first place winners – 2001 WCPS, Darren LaCroix, 2007 WCPS, Vikas Jhingran, Ph. D., one second place winner, 2003 WCPS, David Sanfascon, and one third place winner, 2008 WCPS, Dr. Katherine Morrison.

“You are all Champions in your own way. That doesn't mean you have to be number 1 or be the best. Just do your best. If you aren't first, then make those people ahead of you break records by pushing them with your personal best. Consider for a moment what we achieve from athletics - the sheer fun of competing - the building of a healthy and alert mind and body - stamina, courage, perseverance, dedication, commitment, selflessness and most importantly, the will to excel.” Anoymous

Beginning in the late 1950’s, George Bissel, from the old Newton Club represented District 31 at the International Speech Contest.

"True champions aren't always the ones that win, but those with the most guts". Mia Hamm.

Then in 1980, Dan Blake from the Attleboro Club, (renamed - Achievers Club # 1625) represented District 31 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

"If you're a champion, you have to have it in your heart". Chris Evert

Astoundingly, since 1998, District 31 has dominated the World Champion of Public Speaking - Region Vii Contest.

“Champion the right to be yourself; dare to be different and to set your own pattern; live your own life and follow your own star.” Wilfred Peterson

In 1998, Dacia Jones Nickerson, DTM, from the Providence Toastmasters Club competed in Palm Desert, California.

“Champions know that success is inevitable; that there is no such thing as failure, only feedback. They know that the best way to forecast the future is to create it.”
Michael J. Gelb

It was in 2001 that Darren La Croix, member of the Bose Speakers Club # 8879 won first place title with his speech "OUCH"! at the Toastmasters International Speech Contest held in Anaheim, California.

“Champions aren´t made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them - a desire, a dream, a vision.” Muhammad Ali (American Boxer and Activist, b.1942)

A year later in 2002 Terry Schutt, DTM competed for the title in San Antonio, Texas.

"Champions know there are no shortcuts to the top. They climb the mountain one step at a time. They have no use for helicopters!” Judi Adler quotes

In 2003, David Sanfacon placed second in the world in Atlanta, Georgia. David holds the distinction of being the first and only International second place world winner from District 31.

“If you want to take your mission in life to the next level, if you're stuck and you don't know how to rise, don't look outside yourself. Look inside. Don't let your fears keep you mired in the crowd. Abolish your fears and raise your commitment level to the point of no return, and I guarantee you that the Champion Within will burst forth to propel you toward victory.” Bruce Jenner American Athlete, b.1949

In 2007, Vikas Jhingan, Ph. D. member of the Humor & Drama Club, Tuesday Toastmasters at MIT (originally from India) won first place with his speech - "The Swami's Question" in Phoenix Arizona. Giving District 31 Two WCPS First Place Crowns.

“Champions keep playing until they get it right.” Billie Jean King (American Tennis Player considered to be one of the greatest female tennis players in history. b.1943)

In 2008, Dr. Katherine Morrison member of Center Speakers Club won Third Place in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. History was made by having a woman win from D31 as well as the first third place winner from D31. ALSO Two woman competed and each took home a trophy and a title - (First Place winner LaShuda Rundles). Well done ladies!

“A champion is someone who gets up when he can't.” Jack Dempsey

WOW - How about a STANDING OVATION for all of these CHAMPS who had the "Courage to Compete" and win the Region Vii Contest and then go on to the International Stage!!

It could be YOU up there! It all starts inside, begin with an idea, write a speech, get a coach, get feedback and practice with "STAGE TIME"! "STAGE TIME"! "STAGE TIME"!! - as 2001 WCPS Darren LaCroix would say!

Interdistrict A & B Speech Contests

“Am I allowed to say I really wanted this? This is fantastic”. Steven Spielberg, Best Director, Saving Private Ryan

Just five days before the Toastmasters “International Speech Contest” - there are two Toastmasters “Interdistrict Speech Contests - A & B” given simultaneously - same day/same time - this year it was on Tuesday August 12, 2008.

I volunteered to be an usher for the Speech Contest "A" because I really wanted to see a fellow Champion’s Edge Member, Bob Mole, (who is originally from the USA) representing District 59 - France. Bob is fairly new Toastmaster and he only completed six speeches from the Competent Communicator Manual when he made it to Interdistricts! He delivered his speech a few times at the “Get Paid Champ Camp” and got some coaching from the Champs. I really felt that Bob did an excellent job and with more experience, more coaching and more competitions; he certainly can make it back to Interdistricts! [see photo - above Bob with Fellow Edge Members: Kathryn Mackenzie, Imelda Rocha, ME, Erin Lau]

But there can only be ONE WINNER of the “Contest A”!! First Place WINNER was Jock Elliot, from District 69 – Brisbane Australia! “GOOD’ON YA’MATE”!!

Other contestants from the Interdistrict “Contest A” were: Juan Escobedo, from District 34 – Mexico, Mark D’Silva - District 70, Christof Appel -District 74 – South Africa, Michael del Roasario - District 75 - Philippines, Kiminari Azuma - District 76 - Japan.

AND only one WINNER from “Contest B” - Loghandran Krishnasamy from District 51 - Malaysia and he won WCPS SECOND place at the International Speech Contest on Saturday August 16, 2008! WAY TO GO Loghandran!! www.Tmdistrict51.org

Other Contestants from Interdistrict Contest B were: (Interdistrict B - Second place) Sammy Su -District 67 – Twain, (Interdistrict B - Third Place) Koka Prasad -
District 79 - Middle East, Sultan Nazir, District 71 – Sanjiv Jetly - District 72, Chris Smith, District 73, Koka Prasad – District 79 – Middle East, Arthur Ting - District 80

What an incredible journey for ALL the Contestants from both the “Interdistrict A and B Speech Contests”! They deserve so much credit for taking the steps and all the feedback from other club members, coaches and friends to make it to the Toastmasters Convention. THEY ARE ALL WINNERS!!

Are you willing to take constructive feedback from others to make a better speech? It isn’t always easy but you will see amazing results and deliver better speeches. I urge you to compete!

2008 Calgary - Oh Canda! Opening Ceremonies

"The man who does not take pride in his own performance performs nothing in which to take pride". Thomas J. Watson (1874 - 1956)

I volunteered to carry the Republic of S. Korean (R.SK) Flag at the 2008 Toastmasters International Convention in Calgary - "Oh Cananda" Opening Ceremonies! I am looking for a Rep.S.K. District Website - but have only found club websites. If anyone out there can help me please forward the info. Of course I carried their flag with dignity and pride! Like I did when I was on the flag squad in high school while I competed in many competitions, marched in many parades and performed at many football games.

I was excited to finally meet my EDGE Friends during the "Get Paid to Speak" Champ Boot Camp and EdgeNet Summit (I will post more on that soon!). Another Fellow Edge member whom I E-met on the Edge Forum is Palmo Carpino and he carried the Italian flag (LUCKY! PREGO! - SALUTE!) www.palmocarpino.com -

Palmo although Italian - is from Calgary, Canada and he is VERY funny! He was also VERY accomodating to many Toastmasters and "Vill'Edgers as we Edge Members affectionately call ourselves. Thank you Palmo - it was great connecting with you!

The only place where I felt the 2008 "Opening Ceremonies" in Calgary may have fallen short was with the Keynote Speaker's Address - BUT maybe I was expecting a little more after attending my first Toastmasters International Convention in 2007 and hearing W Mitchell at the Opening Ceremonies in Phoenix, Arizonia.

Here is a copy of my District 31 BLOG post from 2007

KEYNOTE SPEAKER/Author!! W Mitchell

"It's Not What Happens To You, It's What You Do About It". W Mitchell

Good thing for inspiring books on long airline flights... back from PHX to Boston!! I completed reading my "signed copy" by the 2007 Toastmasters International Convention Keynote Speaker, W Mitchell - "It's Not What Happens To You, It's What You Do About It".

The book is a great read - but to hear W Mitchell speak is even BETTER - I do recommend both !! I met Mitchell in person - He is very charismatic - A person who has endured physical pain in two separate accidents; One from his motorcycle - becoming a burn victim and one from his private airplane - becoming paralyzed and in a wheelchair.

We could all learn many lessons in life especially if we believe too that "It's Not What Happens To You, It's What You Do About It" - Mitchell through these two tragedies became an in demand public speaker traveling all around the world inspiring audiences with his story(s) in his wheelchair.

-------------

Now when I compare the 2007 with the 2008 Keynote Speaker - it is not that the '08 didn;t have a great message, actually if it were a "documentary" speech...it certainly had inspiring moments, especially since he climbed Mt. Everest!

BUT, 08 just didn;t DELIVER his message in a way that was inspiring and uplifting to the audience. He did;t connect and he didn;t really have any "Magic Moments". The speech didn;t seem to be rehersed, and at one point he even said "Oh...Where was I" (?!) and this was while he was using Power Point!

Honestly when you are at the Toastmasters Convention - which is like our "OLYMPICS" of Public Speaking - the KEYNOTE ADDRESS sets the tone for the week. I hope that a fellow Toastmaster was kind enough to direct '08 to attend a Toastmaster meeting! Since that would be an excellent opportunity for him to learn how "to present his message so he can take pride in his performance and delivery".

When the BIG presentation comes your way - will you take pride in your delivery and be ready to give the performance that others are expecting of YOU?

2008 Calgary - Hall of Fame

“We are a group of people brought together to do things we could not do alone”.

2006-2007 Toastmasters International President Johnny Uy, DTM

Here it is the "Excellence in Marketing" Award that I earned for meeting (and exceeding) the District 31 Marketing goal. It was handed to me by the 2007-2008 Toastmasters International President, Chris Ford, DTM at the 2008 Toastmasters International Convention in Calgary during the "Hall of Fame" ceremony.

Standing next to me is Region Vi International Director, and past District 40 District Governor, Gary Mull, DTM who announced the entire District 31 Top Three Team on the big stage at the Hall of Fame.

We are currently a Distinguished District for the fifth (5th) year in a row from 2003-2008 and we are number 41st in the world!

Who do you go to when you need help? Believe me - I did NOT earn the "Excellence in Marketing" award on my own - I had MANY MANY MANY people who helped me.

I couldn;t even figure out how to post a photo on this BLOG without assistance. It takes TEAM WORK and when I don;t know how to complete a task or I don;t know the answer - I "GO TO" people who do.

2008 GOP National Conventions Speeches

“This is America and every woman can walk through every door of opportunity” - Quote from Republican Vice President Nomination and Governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin's -"Life Lessons Learned" from her parents Chuck and Sally.

All political views aside. I am not posting what my views are or who I will vote for (at least not on this post) this post is strickly for the speeches.

I heard some great speeches given during the 2008 GOP National Democratic and Republican Conventions. Some were not so great.

Democratic National Convention

Republican National Convention

I also want to use a term that the 1990 WCPS David Brooks uses as a great "Magical Moment” when Governor, Sarah Parlin was speaking and members in the audience were holding up handmade signs that read “Hockey Moms 4 Parlin”.

Sarah paused, giggled and acknowledged the signs by adding a little quote as she vered off her scripted speech and offered this little gem - “I love those Hockey Moms”…“You know what they say?" "The difference between a hockey mom and a pitbull... Lipstick”?

The crowd ROARED with applause! Even though the crowd was already behind her – she used that little "Magical Moment" to connect with the audience! Priceless.

What do you do to create a "Magical Moment" with your audience?

NSF Public Speaking Contest - Judge

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world” Mahatma Gandhi 1869-1948

On Saturday August 30, 2008 I had the opportunity to judge the North South Foundation (NSF) Public Speaking Contest at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge MA.

“North South Foundation (NSF) is a non-profit voluntary organization that awards scholarships to qualified and needy students in India entering colleges regardless of religion, gender, caste or creed. The Scholarship program in India is designed to encourage excellence among the poor. It is targeted at qualified, needy students entering college. Over 2,500 scholarships have been awarded to date. Each scholarship is $250 per student per year”.

http://www.northsouth.org/

I was very impressed with the quality of the speeches especially since the question was very challenging and the students only had one half hour (½) to write out their speeches, and then deliver the speech with very minimum use of small index cards.

ALL of the contestants deserve a BIG Congrats. Here are the three finalists; first place - Shubhro Saha, second place - Ishita Kalya and third place - Rishika Chugh!

I was referred to be a judge by the Toastmaster 2007 “World Champion of Public Speaking”, WCPS, Vikas Jhingran who is originally from India and earned his Ph.D. this past May 2008 at MIT. He relocated with his sweet wife Angali from District 31 to Houston Texas (District 56 - Region III) to work at the Shell Oil Company.

Vikas is an EXCELLENT example of how joining Toastmasters and competing in Public Speaking Contests have improved his abilities as a speaker and presenter - (keep in mind that English is not his native language). He is receiving invites to speak all around! He was able to take feedback from many members in District 31 including the 2001 WCPS, Darren LaCroix and the 2003 WCPS Second Place Champ David Sanfacon.

I am thrilled to report that while at the 2008 Toastmasters International Convention in Calgary, Vikas presented an educational session. “Public Speaking - An Emotional Approach” where he “explores the importance of having an emotional connection with the audience using examples from pieces of music, videos and art”.

What further impressed me is that Vikas even had two products at the Convention! Three of his winning speeches the District Speech – “Arranged Marriage”, Regional Speech – “Post Card”, International Speech– “The Question” to sell on DVDs and CDs. Way to go Vikas!

Public Speaking, started from 2006 Regionals, is a pilot contest and is one of the growing lists of contests offered by NSF. This contest is offered with a view to help and educate our children on how to prepare and present a speech before their peers or to a group of people. We all face situations on a regular basis at work, school, and local meetings to deliver speeches to groups of individuals, coworkers and others on topics we have been involved with. At times, people feel stressed out during the preparation and in anticipation of giving a speech.

NSF contests are developed with a view that as our children start preparing for these at an early age, they can become successful communicators and deliver better speeches and become successful. Since public speaking is an art, one can develop the skills for better speaking with determination and hard work.

The contests are conducted every year in two steps. First, children participate in a regional contest, conducted in various states throughout USA. Qualified winners of the regional contests are invited to participate in the National Finals. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners from each contest at the Nationals are awarded scholarships of $1,000, $500, and $250 respectively, redeemable in the winners' freshman year of college.

SKYPE!! http://about.skype.com/

“The Internet is the most important single development in the history of human communication since the invention of call waiting.” Dave Barry - American Writer and Humorist

I highly recommend signing up for a Skype account because it offers text chat, voice chat, video chat and conference calling at a very affordable price - $$ FREE!!

I just spent about a half an hour speaking with my Toastmaster friends from South Africa - Craig and Lois Strachan. Lois is currently serving as the District 74 District Governor, and Craig is serving as the Lt. Governor of Education and Training. http://www.toastmasters74.org/

Becoming a Toastmaster is certainly helping me expand my network of connections that stretch beyond my local District 31 - Massachusetts and Rhode Island. I now have friends around the United States and even crossing boarders to many other countries. These online tools are perfect ways to assist me in keeping in touch with others around the GLOBE.

Online Chat

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_chat

Online chat can refer to any kind of communication over the Internet, but is primarily meant to refer to direct one-on-one chat or text-based group chat (formally also known as synchronous conferencing), using tools such as instant messengers, Internet Relay Chat, talkers and possibly MUDs, MUCKs, MUSHes and MOOes. The expression online chat comes from the word chat which means "informal conversation".[1]
