All The World;s A Stage

"All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players" William Shakespeare
(from As You Like It 2/7)

So what do you think of this new Blog look? I am looking for a theme and a new design to my website - www.findyourplatform.com - The stage logo is something I borrowed from Igroops President Ryan Levesques Blog "Stage Time". I posted it on my Igroops webpage back in June 2007 and I promised I would be using and so here it is! I realize it is not unique - but being an Emerson Theatre graduate, I think it fits me - just right!

Let me know what you think?

----

All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.
And then the whining school-boy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slipper'd pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side,
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.

For the live album by Rush, see All the World's a Stage (album).
All the world's a stage is the phrase that begins a famous monologue from William Shakespeare's As You Like It, spoken by the melancholy Jaques. The speech compares the world to a stage and life to a play, and catalogues the seven stages of a man's life, sometimes referred to as the seven ages of man: infant, school-boy, lover, soldier, justice, pantaloon, and second childhood, "sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything". It is one of Shakespeare's most frequently-quoted passages.

MSPCC/ Jane Doe Urge MASS Voters No Question # 1

http://www.sec.state.ma.us/ele/elepip08/pip08idx.htm
2008 Statewide Ballot Questions

-------

On Tuesday Novemeber 4, 2008 we will be heading out to the polls to vote for our next President and Vice President and who ever wins I do hope they can lead this country into a new direction!!

Here in Massachusetts many groups are urging voters to VOTE NO on Question One!

As a volunteer Special Education Surrogate Parent I am voting NO. As a survivor of domestic abuse I am voting NO - because without the many support services that were offered to me - I would not have been able to break free with my new born (who will turn 11 on Nov 14th).

I ask you to PLEASE VOTE NO and keep the many services that the state of Massachusetts provides to the many needed programs for children and adults across the state.

How about you - what do you believe in? What do you stand for? Are you helping to make
a difference?

VOTE NO ON QUESTION # 1 !!!

----
Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children

http://www.mspcc.org/site/MessageViewer/?em_id=3861.0&dlv_id=7781

Ballot Questions: vote NO on question one!

On your ballot, you will be asked to answer three questions. You can learn more about the questions by clicking here.

In these difficult economic times question 1 stands to make matters worse…much…much… worse. Question 1 would eliminate the state’s income tax which translates to a loss of $12.7 billion in revenues or 40% of the state’s budget. Struggling families will gain nothing from this proposal, any minimal benefit will be reaped by individuals earning more than $50K per year and increase nine fold for those making over $100K per year.

This loss of revenue will translate to the need for dangerous reductions in vital state services such as 911, fire and police response, a deterioration of roads and bridges, closure of parks and recreational facilities and a likely increase in the property tax.

But the effects will be most acute for children and other vulnerable citizens of the Commonwealth. On the heels of $1.05 billion in cuts to state services efforts to care for children who are abused and neglected, to assist children with developmental delays or behavioral health issues and to give children a good education will be devastated.

As adults it is our responsibility to act responsibly to protect the health and welfare of our children. Question one is reckless and will harm kids.

Voter’s Guide from NEACH

The New England Alliance for Children’s Health (NEACH), an initiative of Community Catalyst, is a regional partnership of hospitals, advocates, health care providers, business leaders, interfaith organizations, insurers, and consumers who work to help provide children in New England with the opportunity to access quality health care.

NEACH just released the results of its regional Congressional candidate questionnaire on issues that affect children and families in an online Voter’s Guide. http://talkingtoastmasters.blogspot.com/2007_08_01_archive.html

THIS INTERVIEW WAS FROM 2007

Episode #4 - In today's episode, Bo (who attended the International Convention) and Ryan (who did not) speak with fellow Toastmaster from District 31, Sherri Raftery (who incidently also attended the convention...and yes, she is the same Sherri I mentioned in the blog post below!) We talk about the International speech contest (Yea Vikas!), meeting Toastmasters from around the world, being "juicy", the differences between the International Convention and district/regional conferences, the hot and steamy climate in Phoenix, AZ...and we get a little too much information about the apparently hot and steamy dance floor at the dinner dance! (insert shocked smiley face emoticon here) Listen now!

Talking Toastmasters!! Podcast

"What does it take to plan a district conference? What are some of the things that go on at district conferences"?

"Be prepared to be educated and entertained".

Episode #44: Interview with Sherri Raftery on Planning a District Conference

I got a call from Bo Bennett creater of the Free Toast Host and the Igroops and Ryan Levesque, Igroops President asking if I would like to be interviewed on the "Talking Toastmasters" Podcast in about five minutes to discuss planning a District Conference (since I am the 2008-2009 Lt. Governor of Education and Training). WELL OF COURSE I WOULD!! Last time I was interviewed by the Talking Toastmasters Partners was August 2007 after we attended the Toastmasters International Convention in Phoenix.

----

Read this exciting post from Ryan - when I called him from the 2007 International Convention Speech Contest - to share the moment that Vikas Jhingran had WON first place - that was simply amazing!

Here is Ryan's personal BLOG post on Saturday, August 18, 2007

Oh, Yes We Did!

That is, yes we did interview the next World Champion of Public Speaking!

The word from the Toastmasters International convention in Phoenix is that Vikas Jhingran, whom we interviewed last week on Talking Toastmasters, won first place in the WCPS and is the new World Champion!

Here's how I found out, just a short while ago:

I had just left my house and was less than a mile away, when my cell phone rang. I answered, and a hushed voice said, "Ryan! This is Sherri...they're about to announce the winners and I need you to update the website!" It was Sherri Raftery, the District 31 Lt. Governor of Marketing. She was calling me, as I'm one of the people who helps maintain the District 31 web site, and being at the convention, she didn't have quick access to do it herself. I pulled the car around as fast as I could, and headed toward home.

Three hundred feet from my driveway, I heard: "And the third place winner is..." I couldn't make out the last name, but it wasn't Vikas-- that much I knew. As I walked in to the kitchen:

"And the second place winner is...Rory Vaden!"

Now this was a name I recognized! I had stumbled on Rory's websites a few weeks ago, and read about him last time as a finalist at the WCPS. I was definitely impressed with this guy! He has an amazing story, and a great message. And from watching his video clips, it was clear his is an excellent speaker. You can see his websites here for yourself: Discipline Dynamic and Success Starts Now Seminars. I'm glad he took the silver, well deserved, I'm sure.

I was then in front of the computer in my home office, logged on to our District Website, ready to type. "And the 2007 World Champion of Public Speaking is...."

And then all I heard was booming applause, cheering and screaming! The announcers voice did not come through! And then I heard Sherri's voice break through the din, "Put it up on the website, Ryan! Put it up...I have to go!" I figured that meant Vikas must have won...and I tried to ask, but she didn't hear me. Click. The phone went dead. Before posting on the website, and sending an email to the nearly 300 members on our list, I called Sherri back. (Can you imagine the scandal and embarrassment if I would cause for Vikas and myself if I posted that he had won, and he had not...only to then have to post an "I'm sorry, I misunderstood" message?) But yes, it was true, Vikas had won!

It's hard not to let my bias show at a time like this. This is proud day for District 31. Vikas joins fellow WCPS Darren LaCroix, as one of two WCs from our District (Eastern MA and RI). I am so happy for Vikas-- I cannot imagine how excited he must feel. Simply amazing!

(Special thanks to Sherri Raftery for an experience that was the next best thing to being there!)

======
You are welcome Ryan - I wish you could have been there - and when the 2009 Convention comes to FOXWOODS in Connecticut - I hope YOU and MANY members from our D31 district will be there to experience the International Speech Contest - as well as the Convention itself! We have already been asked to help with the volunteering -and even though my district is much smaller than a large CONVENTION - I know that VOLUNTEERS are always needed and very welcomed.!!

What exciting and memorable moments have YOU shared with others?

Are you flexible enough to be interviewed on a moments notice? Want to learn those skills? Join a Toastmasters Club in your area. www.toastmasters.org

"Seek-A-Speaker" Launched!

"Seek-A-Speaker" is a tremendously fabulous tool in helping us reach our goals and challenge ourselves while providing a wonderful opportunity to network and meet other fellow Toastmasters"! "It was a remarkable experience for me". Margo McCole

As 2008-2009 Lt. Governor of Education and Training I launched the "Seek-A-Speaker" Program here in District 31 which covers the Eastern Massachusetts all the way up to the North Shore of Boston and down to the South Shore and across to Worcester and includes the entire State of Rhode Island. We have about 151 Clubs and 3,000 plus members. What is it? It gives speakers a chance to speak at other clubs and it gives clubs a chance to have others speakers speak at their meetings.

"I benefited so much from the feedback I received last night from the Leading Speakers Club (Advanced/ Saugus, MA)". Margo McCole

I have a "Seek-a-Speaker" Coordinator, Sheila Sullivan and she is very busy trying to match the requests. A few members and clubs have asked for D31's 2001 World Champion of Public Speaking, Darren LaCroix to give a coaching session. Although he can not honor all of our requests we are thrilled when he is visiting his family in Boston because we can try and coordinate with his calendar!!

My friend, fellow Toastmaster and Edge Member, Derek Perkins, along with Sheila Sullivan coordinated a "Live Coaching Session" at the Sudbury Library in Sudbury, MA on Monday Oct 20th! In attendance was one of our oldest...and I do mean "OLDEST" members in District 31. Our Past District Governor, Charlie Keane is 103 years old. That't right One Hundered and Three Years Old!

Thank you to Judy Artley and her son Chester for transporting Charlie to the event. AND for offering to take him to the District 31 Conference on Saturday November 8, 2008.

http://www.district31.org/FallConference.htm

The Seek-A-Speaker Program is officially opened up to members outside of District 31 as well. If you would like to take advantage of this opportunit please contact Sheila Sullivan at district31seekaspeaker@yahoo.com

http://www.district31.org/Seek-A-Speaker.htm

"Last week I attended AccelOrators Advanced TM Club in Concord, MA - I used the opportunity to present my Humorous speech and get feedback on it". "The round the room form of evaluation, combined with the written evaluation forms that some people completed, gave me valuable new insights and perspectives into the speech. Most valuable of all, though, was the resulting opportunity this gave me to further improve the speech". Derek Perkins

"I think this is a very useful initiative and encourages other members – whether they are in a contest or not – who are serious about improving, to try it out. It’s worth the effort". Derek Perkins

Light Houses

"The coals burn from your belly, flames rise from your top, and peek out of uncovered openings, that spread your light, and shine across the rapid waters, sending warmth, and guiding me home, during the storm, I can’t see, but I’m not lost, keeping me safe, flicker of rays, through the frost, like a child under the covers, with a night light"! By Sherri Raftery

----

"You are a lighthouse, there you remain, you are quite, yet audible. You are visible and strong, uou guide, you light, you never sleep, not even at night. Except for your rays, which shine through, giving power to see, giving direction to find the way, you’re a sundial in the darkness, in the storm, in the rain, bursting your light quietly, giving hope, to the helpless you’re a hero in the night, expelling your light!! By, Sherri Raftery

Lighthouses are a passion of mine. I have a friend Brian who sends me photos of lighthouses that he visits during his travels at sea. Someday I will visit them too and take photos and paint them. For now I can write poetry about them.

My favorite lighthouse is the Statute of Liberty. One day I visit her in New York, and climb her stairs and stand high above the New York Harbor where materinal and paternal biological great-grandparents came over Italy and Ireland "THE BOAT" to live the American Dream.

Do you have passions or hobbies that you enjoy? Are there "things" you want to do...someday?

Make sure you take the time to do those "things, take those trips and to visit those sights...someday...

Break-A-Leg!!

break a leg = ¡suerte!, ¡buena suerte!
Ex: The theatrical tradition of telling an actor about to go on stage to 'break a leg', may have its origin in a German phrase borrowed from Hebrew.

OUCH - look at my Toastmaster buddy Robert Stefanik who was the 2007-2008 District 31Public Relations Officer and is the 2008-2009 District 31 Speaker Bureau Coordinator. He actually broke both ankles but I will spare you the details.

Being involved in Theatre we always say "Break-A-Leg" - but I try not to use that term too much because I know first hand (or should I say foot) what breaking a leg "REALLY" feels like.

It was the summer I graduated high school and I was working the at a parks and recreations department - I was learning an outdoor activity on the bright green lawn and I tripped in a hole - off in an ambulance I rode and spent my entire summer in a blue cast while hobbling around with crutches...OUCH is right!

Robert, I feel for you - get back on your feet soon - I promise to visit you and I do plan on signing your CAST(S)!!!

D53 Conference Certificates!

"Be The Change You Want To See"
2008 - 2009 District Theme Karin Von Känel, ACB, ALS, District Governor

I attended the District 53 Toastmasters Conference which serves Clubs in Connecticut, Eastern New York, and Western Massachusetts which is my neighboring District as District 31 serves the Eastern Massachusetts and entire state of Rhode Island.

I would love to share that D53 knows how to "PUT ON A GREAT SHOW"!! It was my second time attending a D53's Conference and I was as equally impressed with this one! I even volunteered to help with the Friday "Discover the Talent Within You" Fun Night and as a Speaker Introducer for Jay Discount.

And to my complete surprise and I DO MEAN SURPRISE - I was awarded a $25.00 gift certificate to the Toastmasters International Bookstore for the "CLUB PRIDE" award for clubs outside of D53.

THANKS D53 this certificate will certainly come in handy when we head to the 2009 International Convention in Connecticut FOXWOODS!! YIIPPPPYY!!

I will be posting more about the conference and hopefully adding pix when I get them from Dave Wheeler who is the D53 Lt. Governor of Marketing.

See my certificates of appreciation for participating at the District 53 Conference above! It sure is nice to be appreciated!

Do you value YOUR certificates that you are given? Where do you put them?
On your wall? In a binder? How do you keep and store yours?

"545 PEOPLE" By Charley Reese

"But regardless of whose fault it is, most politicians today are not human beings. You want to pry open their mouths and shout into the darkness, 'Hello! Is there a human being in there?' Buried under all that lust for office, all that fear of offending a contributor? I know there must be." Charley Reese ("Conservative Chronicle", 8 September 1993, p. 17)

I just got this email and thought I would post here on my BLOG - All thoughts are welcome. What are YOUR views?

This is an article written by Charley Reese, a former columnist for the Orlando Sentinel Newspaper. "545 PEOPLE" By Charley Reese

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article18568.htm

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.

Have you ever wondered why, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, we have deficits?

Have you ever wondered why, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, we have inflation and high taxes?

You and I don't propose a federal budget. The president does.

You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.

You and I don't write the tax code, Congress does.

You and I don't set fiscal policy, Congress does.

You and I don't control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president, and nine Supreme Court justices. 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.

I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a president to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine how he votes.

Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party. What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits. The president can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.

The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? She is the leader of the majority party. She and fellow House members, not the president, can approve any budget they want. If the president vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million can not replace 545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts -- of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people.

When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist. \

If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair.

If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red.

If the Marines are in IRAQ , it's because they want them in IRAQ .

If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way.

There are no insolvable government problems.

Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like 'the economy', 'inflation,' or 'politics' that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.

Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.

They, and they alone, have the power.

They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees.

We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

What you do with this article now that you have read it is up to you, though you appear to have several choices:

1. You can send this to everyone in your address book, and hope they do something about it.

2. You can agree to vote against everyone that is currently in office, knowing that the process will take several years.

3. You can decide to run for office yourself and agree to do the job properly.

4. Lastly, you can sit back and do nothing, or re-elect the current bunch.

YOU DECIDE, BUT AT LEAST SEND IT TO EVERYONE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK, MAYBE SOMEONE IN THERE WILL DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

Later that year, he bought a one-way ticket to England, where he took a job as caption writer with Planet Newspapers Ltd. in London.

In 1957 Reese returned to America and served two years in the US Army as a tank gunner. He then went back to reporting before spending six years in advertising and public relations, even working as an advance man and speechwriter in various political campaigns from 1969 to 1971. hi

Charley Reese is a conservative, with many libertarian views, but has written explaining why he is not a libertarian [1] and has been critical of the existence of third parties.[citation needed] Nonetheless he contributes regularly to libertarian websites such as LewRockwell.com and Antiwar.com. He is currently a registered Democrat, but has been previously a Republican as well. In his Dec. 26, 2005 column he writes he was a Democrat but went Republican after JFK got in office; he thought JFK was a lousy president and his harshest presidential criticisms are reserved for Jimmy Carter. After the presidency of George H. W. Bush (1989-1993), he returned to the Democratic Party, citing that the senior Bush brought the 'Rockefeller Wing' into control of the GOP.

Although he disavows the term, saying "I am a traditional conservative, not a neo- or paleo- or any of those other buglike classifications" [2], Charley Reese's views are quite similar to those expressed by paleoconservatives. He is a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and in the past has been a member of the League of the South.[citation needed] Defending the South's position in the Civil War is a common theme of his writings,[3] in which he frequently uses Confederate anecdotes as illustrations. His writings have repeatedly praised Robert E. Lee and vilified Abraham Lincoln. He is also a member of the National Rifle Association, and another recurring theme in his columns is a defence of American's Second Amendment rights against gun control. In recent years he has devoted many of his columns to defending a non-interventionist foreign policy. [4] Although he supported George W. Bush for President in 2000, he has been an outspoken critic of the Bush administration and an opponent of the War in Iraq. In 2004 he supported John Kerry's presidential campaign.

He writes for the Washington Report on Middle Eastern Affairs. According to his latest column at lewrockwell.com Charley Reese has now retired and will no longer be writing. The site had been running his old columns for several weeks stating that he had been on medical leave.

Topsfield Fair

History of the Essex Agricultural Society - 188 Years of Agriculture and Education http://www.topsfieldfair.org/

“The colorful and often exciting history of Topsfield Fair began in 1818 when the Essex Agricultural Society, the non-profit organization that owns the Topsfield Fair, was officially granted a charter on June 12th of that year”.

“The goal of the fledgling Society, formed by a group of "practical farmers" who first met on February 16, 1818, was "to promote and improve the agricultural interests of farmers and others in Essex County."”

“Topsfield Fairgrounds sits on the former Treadwell Farm property. Dr. John Goodhue Treadwell of Salem bequeathed the farm to the Agricultural Society in 1858 for the "promotion of the science of agriculture."”

On Thursday 9th I was one of seven other chaperone parents to take the St. Pius V. School Fifth Graders to the Topsfield Fair in Topsfield, Massachusetts. I had five students in my group; my daughter Sabrina, Sheila, Ashley, Angela and Yvonne who all did great a staying together. They were allowed to look at the exihibts - and they loved the BEEKEEPER one the most.

BUT they were not allowed to go on the rides or play the games. Which worked out fine. We were back on the bus by 12:30 PM. I heard on the radio that morning that John Travolta flew his private plane into the Beverly Airport and was going to visit the Topsfield Fair. I didn;t see him - but I did hear the theme song from Welcome Back Kotter! Which brought me back to my youth when JT was the hottest star. Of course I had posters on my wall and records albumns of his songs and copied all of his dance moves! (I even took a Disco class at the Cambridge Y.M.C.A. - "Nite Fever"...Nite...Fever")

On Monday October 13th Sabrina and I were back at the Topsfield Fair because the Toastmaster Area A-3 Governor Richard Baker arranged to have his A-3 Area Humorous Speech Contest at the Fair on one of the stages. He asked me to be a judge and I gladly agreed. After the judges deliverated he asked me up to give a Table Topic (speaking off the cuff)that was an unexpected but welcoming moment of "STAGE TIME"!!

I promised to take Sabrina on the rides because she couldn;t go on them on her school field trip so after the contest off we went to enjoy another day at the Fair!!

Oh and I just had to share this chuckle I got when I read the first half of this sign since there are SOOOO many animals at the Fair - "No Pets allowed at the Fair" -Exception: Guide Dogs.

Here is a book by David H. Fletcher - Topsfield Fair: America's Oldest - see this link http://www.amazon.com/Topsfield-Fair-Americas-Oldest-America/dp/0738512079

I hope YOU take the time to enjoy YOUR local fairs.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beekeeping

Beekeeping (or apiculture, from Latin apis, bee) is the maintenance of honey bee colonies, commonly in hives, by humans. A beekeeper (or apiarist) keeps bees in order to collect honey and beeswax, for the purpose of pollinating crops, or to produce bees for sale to other beekeepers. A location where bees are kept is called an apiary.

The Beekeeping & Honey Show at Topsfield Fair is the largest at any fair in North America. The first honey exhibits were entered in 1844. The show has been operated and sponsored by the Essex County Beekeepers Association since 1928. In 1998 the International Association of Fairs and Expositions awarded it "First Place" for the excellence of its presentation.
There are up to four live observation hives on display during the Fair. Knowledgeable beekeepers will explain the inner workings of a bee colony to fairgoers. Children can make their own honeycomb beeswax candle to take home as a souvenir of their visit to the Beekeeping Building.
At the 2007 Fair there were more than 250 entries into four divisions at the show including: honey, beeswax, beekeeping related arts & crafts and cooking with honey. The competition is open to all.
