Toastmsters District Governor - What is role and responsibility?

District officers form a leadership team dedicated to the mission of Toastmasters International. Both challenging and rewarding, your leadership role requires you to motivate others to achieve goals. The experience will enhance your own skills, and you'll have the satisfaction of knowing you have helped others grow.

How do you become one?
The district governor, lieutenant governor education and training, lieutenant governor marketing and division governor are all elected by the district council. The public relations officer, secretary and treasurer may be elected or appointed by the district governor (subject to approval by the district council). Area governors may be elected by area councils or appointed by and serve at the will of the district governor. WHQ recommends that they be appointed.

What are the rules?
To hold any elected or appointed district office, you must be a club member in good standing. The deadline to submit district officer appointments to WHQ is July 15. Any officer assignments made after September 1 will not receive credit as having served a full-year officer term.

Death

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death

Death is the permanent termination of biological functions that define a living organism. It refers both to a particular event and to the continuing condition that results thereby.

The true nature of the latter has for millennia been a central concern of the world's religious traditions and of philosophical enquiry. Religions, almost without exception, maintain faith in either some kind of afterlife or reincarnation. Contemporary science regards organismic death as final by definition. The effect of physical death on any possible non-physical mind or soul remains an open question.

All organisms expire in due course from senescence. Intervening phenomena which commonly bring death earlier include malnutrition, predation, disease, accidents resulting in terminal physical injury, or, in extreme circumstances, grave ecosystem disruption. Intentional human activity causing death includes suicide, homicide, and war. Death in the natural world can also occur as an indirect result of human activity: an increasing cause of species depletion in recent times has been destruction of ecological systems as a consequence of the widening spread of industrial technology.

The chief concern of medical science has been to postpone and avert death. Death in this context is now seen as less an event than a process: conditions once considered indicative of death are now reversible. [1] Where in the process a dividing line is drawn between life and death depends on factors beyond the presence or absence of vital signs. In general, clinical death is neither necessary nor sufficient for a determination of legal death. A patient with working heart and lungs determined to be brain dead can be pronounced legally dead without clinical death occurring. Precise medical definition of death, in other words, becomes more problematic, paradoxically, as scientific knowledge and technology advance. Death remains a central mystery of life itself. [2]

History About THE HOME:

Since 1799, children and families in Massachusetts have found helping hands in the various predecessor agencies that comprise what is now The Home for Little Wanderers (The Home). The infrastructure of the present organization reflects a vastly expanded range of services and programs through the merging over the last decade of four major organizations: Boston Children’s Services, The New England Home for Little Wanderers, Parents’ and Children’s Services, and Charles River Health Management.
Throughout their histories, each of the legacy agencies have acted as leaders in providing new and innovative services for children and families in the region:

CHILDREN'S CHAMPION ADVOCACY NETWORK
Children's Champion Advocacy Network, (CCAN) is a statewide network of volunteers recruited to join MSPCC's advocacy efforts for passage of legislation and adoption of policy that promote the well-being of children and families.

Anyone Can Join
CCAN members come from all walks of life and across Massachusetts. Some are CEOs, some are stay-at-home parents, some are college students, and some are even elected officials!
It Does Not Take Much Of Your Time
CCAN members lend their voices when needed. You might be called upon to quickly contact your representatives and senators or the governor concerning a bill or budget amendment. Or you might be invited to attend a breakfast in your area to meet your legislators, or attend a meeting or ceremony at the State House. CCAN is a perfect opportunity for those who wish to volunteer but may have limited time to devote.

How You Can Be Involved
Mostly, you'll be asked to write, email or call your legislators. We can also identify opportunities for you to meet your elected officials. We will keep you informed on policy initiatives and advocacy via emails and this website.

Why CCAN?
Children are voiceless constituents. We have to speak for them. Sometimes, just a handful of calls, letters or emails from constituents to a legislator can make the difference.

Child Abuse
http://www.answers.com/topic/child-abuse

Child abuse is the blanket term for four types of child mistreatment: physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect. In many cases children are the victims of more than one type of abuse. The abusers can be parents or other family members, caretakers such as teachers and babysitters, acquaintances (including other children), and (in rare instances) strangers.

National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children Despite late 18th‐cent. humanitarianism and philanthropy, there was scant concern about neglect and abuse of children before 1870. Pioneer work in America observed by the Liverpool banker Thomas Agnew (1881) led to the formation of several provincial societies for the prevention of child cruelty 1883–5. The London society amalgamated with some provincial counterparts to form the NSPCC (1889).

One Good Deed

"You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon
it will be too late".
Ralph
Waldo Emerson

The Raftery’s are starting our "New Year’s Resolutions" early this year. Why wait until January 1, 2009 when we have our “One Good Deed" idea now? We started today and are going to keep a record of our deeds to "remind" ourselves of our new commitment for the 2009 year.

Of course I already volunteer to assist with many different types of events and organizations now and some of them still help me in many ways!

So today’s good deed was to transport a neighbor/friend and her daughter to a doctors appointment because their family does not own a vehicle.

I encourage YOU, if you aren’t already practicing "One Good Deed" to begin today and please feel free to share your stories with me on my BLOG or email me at courtjestour@aol.com

"You can't live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you". John Wooden

Oh and since I am not unique in this "Good Deed" idea I decided to Google this topic and found a wealth of sites - these are the few I am sharing with you .

"May the angels always carry you on their wings. Always hang on to that Thread of Hope" Jacqui Delorenzo, MS, LMHC

"If our eyes could not see, how beautiful we would see the world through our hearts" Jacqui Delorenzo, MS, Licensed Mental Health Counselor

I recently applied for another position at North Shore Community College as an Academic Advisor for the TRIO Program. http://www.coenet.us/ecm/AM/Template.cfm?Section=What_is_TRIO&Template=/CM/HTMLDisplay.cfm&ContentID=6326

I mentioned this to another employee I work with at the Danvers Computer Lab named Sean Kenney. To my surprise he said he was a student in the TRIO program and that on of his academic advisors, Jacqui DeLorenzo wrote a book called A Thread of Hope and that it was across the hall in the library. I thanked him for sharing that with me and then ran across the hall, checked out the book and read it from front to back that weekend.

A Thread of Hope is an excellent read.
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/A-Thread-of-Hope/Jacqui-Delorenzo/e/9780595447664

It was especially inspiring to me as someone who is also trying to write my memories and publish my own book - "The Little Wanderers Home". http://www.thehome.org/
www.findyourplatform.com

I also love the cover - yes - of course because I LOVE LIGHTHOUSES, but more importantly for the symbolic positioning in having Jaqui standing next to one (on the north shore of boston) dressed in a long white coat - looking like a lighthouse herself. See the resemblence on the bookcover? OK - I am not sure if this was done deliberatly but in my artistic point of view -I think it really paints a picture of the message she has given in her book A Thread of Hope!

I recommend this A Thread of Hope to you - it is inspiring! Thanks for writing it Jacqui!!

From the Front and Back Cover:

While other kids enjoyed the social aspects of school in the early 1960's Jacqui DeLorenzo experienced the torment of bullying. From the moment she stepped onto the bus, walked through the schoolyard, and stepped into the classroom, lunchroom and even her own neighborhood, she was a target. Unfortunately, Jacqui's adulthood proved to be as challenging as her adolescense and childhood but her unwavering faith always sustained her.

A Thread of Hope cronicles Jacqui's journey through her parent's devastating breakup, the death of her thirteen-year-old brother, her own struggle to survive cancer, and her battle with an eating disorder. From the depths of depression, Jacqui has worked to completey accept the person she's become, always leaving room for growth. Jacqui's beliefe in th miracle of God's love guided her to improved self-worth and the realizatoin that she could accomplish anything.

Substance Abuse Counseling Certificate Completed January 2009!

“Never let go of hope. One day you will see that it all has finally come together. What you have always wished for has finally come to be. You will look back and laugh at what has passed and you will ask yourself... 'How did I get through all of that?” Anonymous

In the mail I received a letter from the North Shore Community College, Registrar’s Office.

Dear Sherri:

Your application for graduation from North Shore Community College has been processed. I am pleased to inform you of your eligibility to graduate on January 15, 2009. You have earned a Certificate in Substance Abuse Counseling. Your diploma will be available on campus to pick up in February 2009.

You are eligible to participate in the annual commencement ceremony to be held on May 21, 2009.

Congratulations on your achievement and good luck in your academic pursuits.

Sincerely,

Ms. Mel Potoczak,
Associate Registrar
============

OK – this may sound strange but I actually finished the Substance Abuse Counseling Program in May of 2007 – but technically I am considered a January 2009 graduate. WHY? Well, I wanted to waiver the "Intro to Psych" Course because I had other Psych Courses from my undergraduate and graduate programs. I sent the transcripts over to North Shore Community College – not to be transferred but to waivered as a course requirement. Somehow my paper work got “lost in the shuffle” and I waited and waited and waited to hear back regarding my request. In fact, I waited for TWO years!

All of my friends that I had classes with graduated and moved on to work in the counseling field. I stayed behind and worked at the North Shore Community College’s Computer Lab. I didn’t mind this so much but because I liked working in the lab and assisting with computer questions - plus I really enjoy being on the computer and writing my Toastmasters speeches and posting on blog. But since my hours have been reduced at the lab (along with many others) I realized it is time for a BIG change. And "CHANGE HAS COME".

Ironically when I was in Calgary attending the Toastmasters International Convention in August an instructor Joe from North Shore heard my interview with Bob Oaks on “Fighting Domestic Violence” that aired on WBUR 90.9 Boston NPR News Station.

This is the link if you want to read/hear it.
http://www.wbur.org/news/2008/79443_20080818.asp

Joe was very instrumental in helping me to finally get my certificate because he was able to connect me with Mel from the Registrar’s office where I once again I filled out the paper work and waited and waited and then I opened up my letter of completion!

FINALLY it is official in January 2009 I will have my certificate and can get a job in the counseling field! Wish me luck - I will keep you posted since I am now "CERTIFIABLE" j/k - giggle and grin!
Oh and BTW - I have applied for a position here at NSCC that is perfect for what I want to do - allowing me to utilize my educational background and counseling skills.

Did your paper work or project ever get “lost in the shuffle”? How did you handle it? Did you give up? Wait a year or two like I did? Or did you address it right away?

Definition of Substance abuse

http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=24405

Substance abuse: The excessive use of a substance, especially alcohol or a drug.

(There is no universally accepted definition of substance abuse.)

A definition of substance abuse that is frequently cited is that in DSM-IV, the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) issued by the American Psychiatric Association. The DSM-IV definition is as follows:

1. Recurrent substance use resulting in a failure to fulfill major role obligations at work, school, or home (e.g., repeated absences or poor work performance related to substance use; substance-related absences, suspensions or expulsions from school; neglect of children or household)

2. Recurrent substance use in situations in which it is physically hazardous (e.g., driving an automobile or operating a machine when impaired by substance use)

3. Recurrent substance-related legal problems (e.g., arrests for substance-related disorderly conduct

4. Continued substance use despite having persistent or recurrent social or interpersonal problems caused or exacerbated by the effects of the substance (e.g., arguments with spouse about consequences of intoxication, physical fights)

Commencement

http://www.answers.com/topic/commencement
1. A beginning; a start.
2.
a. A ceremony at which academic degrees or diplomas are conferred.
b. The day on which such a ceremony occurs.
---------------------------

Graduation

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graduation

Graduation is the action of receiving or conferring an academic degree or the ceremony that is sometimes associated, where students become Graduates. Before the graduation, students are referred to as Graduands. The date of graduation is often called degree day. The graduation itself is also called commencement, convocation or invocation. At the University of Cambridge, it is known as general admission. In the United States and Canada, it is also used to refer to the advancement from a primary or secondary school level.

When ceremonies are associated, they usually include a procession of the academic staff and candidates. Beginning at the secondary school level in the United States, the candidates will almost always wear academic dress, and increasingly faculty will do the same. At the college and university level, the faculty will usually wear academic dress at the formal ceremonies, as will the trustees and degree candidates. "Graduation" at the college and university level occurs when the presiding officer confers degrees upon candidates, either individually or en masse, even if graduates physically receive their diploma later at a smaller college or departmental ceremony.
